Iseo is a municipality in Valcamonica, in the province of Brescia, and has about 9,000 inhabitants. It is thought that its name originates from the temple of Hercules and Isis which was present in the area in the past.

Iseo is an important tourist center located on the south-eastern shore of the lake of the same name and is characterized by a mountainous, hilly and, obviously, lake area. In the past it was crossed by an important Roman road which connected Brescia with Valcamonica, skirting Lake Iseo and ending at the town of Rogno.

It is easily accessible by car, bus and train.

It is a natural area that originated from peat extraction and is located on the southern shore of Lake Iseo.

It is the most important wetland by extension of the province of Brescia.

It was mainly the local manpower who worked in the peat bog, paid “by the piece”, i.e. on the basis of the quantity of peat extracted.

The old peat storage building is still present in Iseo.

GARIBALDI SQUARE

In the past called simply ”Piazza del Mercato”, the main square of Iseo has at its center the first non-equestrian statue in the world dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The sculpture was inaugurated in 1883 by Gabriele Rosa and sculpted by Pietro Bordini.
