It has about 4000 inhabitants and is an important administrative center for the inhabitants of the area, with the seat of the Comunità Montana and of the BIM of Valle Camonica.

In this town, which could take its name from the Celtic Brig (mount), some of the most important traces of the rich and long history of the Valley are preserved. Testimonies of culture, art and Christian tradition can be admired in the various churches of the municipality, including for example the Church of San Valentino, the Church of S. Maria Assunta and the Church of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice.

SANCTUARY OF MINERVA

The Sanctuary of Minerva is an ancient Roman place of worship, discovered in 1986 and open to the public since 2007.

This temple was dedicated to the goddess of the same name and was built on an older sanctuary in honor of the presence of river water and springs. The original of the statue is kept in the Archaeological Museum in Cividate Camuno, but in Breno you can still admire the ruins of the temple with its elegant mosaic floors.

BRENO CASTLE

Not to be missed is a visit to the Breno Castle, an authentic stronghold built at the time of Frederick I Barbarossa and which today stands on a large hill which has turned out to be a fundamental archaeological site for understanding the prehistoric Valle Camonica.

It can be reached in a few minutes from the center of Breno and here you can literally touch the many stages in the history of the Camuni. The castle has undergone continuous development during its long life: from an early medieval fortification to an elegant set of tower-houses and palaces surrounded by walls in the Late Middle Ages, up to becoming a military stronghold in the Modern Age.

VILLA GHEZA

Villa Gheza, built between 1930 and 1935, stands in the center of the town of Breno, between the Town Hall and the Palazzo degli Uffici. The author is Maffeo Gheza, a lawyer from Pian di Borno who, after studying in Turin, decided to return to his beloved Vallecamonica, where he took charge of numerous activities. From its charm, this villa seems to come from an ancient era. Its external structure is characterized by various elements: the three-light windows, the bow-windows (recalling nineteenth-century buildings) the terraces, the turret and, perhaps the most particular of all, the “drawbridge”. This goes unnoticed by those who walk around the building, while the turret still stands out in height and dominates the entire Brenese landscape. Villa Gheza is easily reachable from the main road that crosses Breno: shortly after the Town Hall, at the crossroads with the traffic lights, it is possible to see the outside.

Unfortunately, today the villa cannot be visited, except on a weekend in May, when, on the occasion of “Classica”, an event organized by the Nostalgia Club, it is possible to admire the vintage cars inside the villas of the town, including , precisely, Villa Gheza.
